San Gimignano

TERRITORY

San Gimignano

San Gimignano, a Unesco heritage site since 1990, owes its fame to the incredible number of towersthat stood over the roofs of the small town, even 65 in the city’s heyday.
Today there are thirteen left that contribute to designing a certainly unique skyline.

The central square, Piazza della Cisterna, with its characteristic triangular shape, is located in the heart of San Gimignano, near Piazza Duomo. It owes its name to a cistern intended for public use, where the grooves left by the ropes with which the jugs were pulled to draw water are still visible today.

On the square rise the Devil’s Tower, which according to legend was built by Satan himself, and the towers of the Ardinghelli family, the most powerful Ghibelline family in San Gimignano.
Often the square is animated by musical events or fairs such as that of Santa Fina which is held on 12 March.

A visit to San Gimignano cannot be considered complete without having seen the Civic Museums, the complex that is located in Piazza del Duomo and includes the Palazzo Comunale, the Pinacoteca and the Torre Grossa.
The Dome, considered one of the most prestigious in Tuscany, is divided into three naves and is a true anthology of frescoes from the Florentine school.

The Palazzo Comunale, currently houses the Civic Museum and the Pinacoteca, inside which it is possible to visit the Dante’s room with the Majesty of Lippo Memmi and enter the Torre del Podestà – or Torre Grossa – which with its 54 meters is the highest in San Gimignano and on which you can climb to admire a unique view from the top of the splendid medieval village.
But its fame of this splendid place in the Sienese countryside does not depend only on its aristic-architectural beauties, do not miss a taste of Vernaccia di San Gimignano, a fine white wine produced only on these hills.
